Intro

Building Bridges, One Story at a Time

River Crossing Theatre is an ensemble in the lower Susquehanna River Valley, trained to build community through the dramatic portrayal of real-life stories. Through the art of improvisational forms like Playback Theatre, audiences participate in creating a new story that recognizes and celebrates both the differences and the common ground in our communities. Formed in 2007 to serve the Healing York Initiative (York, PA), the ensemble draws from members in Lancaster, York and Adams Counties.

Playback Theatre is a simple improvisational form in which members of the audience tell stories and watch them played back on the spot. As the stories come alive on stage, audience and players become entwined in a community dialogue that is both uniquely personal and powerfully universal. Often performed around social themes, the performances and workshops of Playback Theatre can be a vital catalyst for both challenging and celebrating the life of community groups, religious groups, professional groups, family gatherings and more.

Next up, YWCA, Theatre for Transformation and Lancaster Friends Meeting in Lancaster the Susquehanna Waldorf School in Marietta. Others are in the works. Check out our Events page-tab for the latest. We're excited to be offering more interactive, community-building stuff, so watch out Central PA, here we come!

Everyone is Responsible for the Story

Created On: 03/23/2010 09:46:47
Our last performance - a class graduation - was classic. One teller told of an unfinished story - having good news and bad news about her adult son. The players improvised through to an ending, without a sense of clear closure or "getting the essence" that we so often catch. But after the story, the conductor asked the audience for responses and another woman in the audience completed the story. "For me, this was about what it's like to be a mother, a parent, and to be helpless." And a sense of resonance filled the house. We played "helpless" and our performance was, for all purposes, complete. Finding the essence of our story is a pursuit that gains only clarity when we share it. March 2010 York Little Theatre
