Intro

facilitator, trainer, artist

I am an artist-facilitator and promoter. Since breakdancing on the playground in 5th grade, i keep discovering a love of dance and the arts, while nurturing a career in improving our society through international development and conflict resolution. I picked up alternative theatre and dance at Hampshire and Amherst Colleges where i also learned social dances--swing, contra, salsa and Argentine tango. My main artistic passions are Contact Improv and Playback Theatre, and i've practiced them intensively since 2003 in Washington, DC, Germany, across the US and now in Central PA.  I'm now working in my hometown to build community with these unique arts. Active in the Society of Friends and the Church of the Brethren, i live here with my wife and our dear little ones.

Inspired by a Pilgrimage Back to College

Created On: 06/14/2010 15:51:33
Here i thought my college pilgrimage, the first in more than ten years, would yield at worst, isolation and at best, inner self-reflection. What i got were people gushing about how much they thought of me and how much promise i seemed to always have had. No matter if that's been "fulfilled" to my satisfaction, the pilgrimage brought me to a place of re-connection with myself - past through future - and with it, a sense of empowerment and inner balance. Of course it helps that Hampshire College is all about entrepreneurial imagination and pioneering solutions to problems new and old. And in any case, for this visit, i am gleeful to have returned more whole. Thank you friends and thank you Hampshire!

Hot Video: Building Community with Playback Theatre

I am proud to present this video, the work of Courtney Shumway, a brilliant video artist, poet and design student at the Art Institute of York. Courtney is also a member of the River Crossing Playback ensemble and understands that craft well. The video dives into the fascinating dynamics of one story in one performance in the Healing York Initiative, started to address racial divisions in the past and present life of York, Pennsylvania. I think you’ll find this video one of the finest descriptions of Playback Theatre on the entire web, telling not just what Playback Theatre IS but also so effectively, what it DOES. Let’s watch!
