Jubilee arts are liberating, healing and transforming - personally and for the community.  Some of these arts are free-formed or truly experimental.  Others use specific forms like Playback Theatre, InterPlay, Theatre of the Oppressed, Contemplative Dance, 5Rhythms and more. They often stand apart from traditional arts because of a combination of qualities:

Participation: Inviting an audience into the creative process;

Embodiment: Using the body to communicate feelings, questions, responses, stories;

Improvisation: Taking advantage of the moment - for both artists and audiences;

Storytelling: Communicating multi-layered meaning with this ancient practice.

Many Western art forms have begun incorporating these qualities -- from hands-on museums and interactive web software to visual artists using interactive "performance art."  It's a hopeful and empowering trend.  And in the face of a numbing one-way media presence of television, YouTube, and billboards, it needs to expand.
