Casting Call: Synergy in Action (Silver Spring, MD)

Synergy in Action is a Playback Theater company based in Washington DC under the direction of Kimberly Rattley. Synergy in Action will hold a casting call on Nov. 17, 7-8pm and 8-9pm in Silver Spring, MD for its upcoming performance season.

Playback Theatre is an interactive theatre technique which originated 30 years ago and now has a worldwide presence. During a Playback performance, an audience member tells a story from their personal experience, then chooses cast members to play the significant characters. The conductor guides the "teller" through the storytelling process. After the story is told, it is immediately recreated and given artistic shape and coherence by a cast of seasoned actors and musicians.

We are looking to accept up to 5 new members, with an aim of achieving a good mix of gender and race balance. Actors should possess strong improvisational skills, the ability to work with youth, and strong interest in theater as a therapeutic tool. Musical ability (instrumentalists, vocalists, percussionists) a plus, but not necessary. Bilingual (Spanish/English) ability a major plus.

Actors should bring a recent headshot and resume to the audition, which will be comprised of improvisational scenes. Come dressed to move and interact with current company members.

Commitment is for three rehearsals a month, Monday nights from 7-9pm, 501 Sligo Avenue Silver Spring. Rehearsal location can be accessed by car or by 10-minute bus ride from the Silver Spring metro.

We perform and do workshops in schools and universities as well as in corporate settings. Performances take place in the DC area, in the evening and during the day. Company members will be asked to provide a routine background check in order to work in the school system. New members first join the training company to develop a strong understanding of the Playback approach, before joining the senior company. Compensation for senior company members varies from $150-$300 per performance or workshop.
